In humans there are several types of stem cells, each with variable levels of potency. Stem cell treatments are a type of cell therapy that introduces new cells into adult bodies for possible treatment of cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders and other medical conditions. Stem cells have been used to repair tissue damaged by disease or age. In a developing embryo, stem cells can differentiate into all the specialized cells—ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm, but also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs, such as blood, skin, or intestinal tissues.

Systems biology is the study of Theoretical aspects of systems biology of biological components, which may be molecules, cells, organisms or entire species. Living systems are dynamic and complex and their behavior may be hard to predict from the properties of individual parts.

It involves the computational (involving Insilico modeling in systems biology, Biomarker identification in systems biology) and mathematical modeling of complex biological systems. An emerging engineering approach applied to biomedical and biological scientific research, systems biology is a biology-based inter-disciplinary field of study that focuses on complex interactions within biological systems, using a holistic approach (holism instead of the more traditional reductionism) to biological and biomedical research involving the use of In vitro regulatory models in systems biology using OMICS tools. Particularly from year 2000 onwards, the concept has been used widely in the biosciences in a variety of contexts.

Many Funding Opportunities in this research has been bought up by Support ISB, National Science Foundation, NIH and many Collaborative Funding Opportunities.

Integrative Biology-2016 is a quintessential platform for presenting research about marketing, exchanging ideas about it and thus, contributes to the dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of both the academia and business. Integrative Biology is where the future intersects. This event brings together eminent researchers and associates to explore the emerging field. We bring together Knowledge, creative, and technology leaders from the Biology industry for the most current and relevant discussions.

Why Berlin?

More than 232 biotechnology companies with over 4,000 employees working in the sector, the Berlin region is Germany’s premier biotechnology center and one of the top five biotech centers in Europe. "Global Players" of the pharmaceutical sector are located here like Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, Sanofi, Shire, BASF, Takeda Pharma, Menarini Group/Berlin-Chemie, BIOTRONIK, Bausch & Lomb, Nycomed (Takeda Company) etc. Excellent research infrastructure with effective networks: 350 scientific working groups with 5.000 scientists (at Charité only). Infrastructure costs for R&D in the region are below international levels. And a highly qualified labor force from the globe work here. Berlin consists of 5 universities, 4 colleges of applied science and 30 non-university research institutes (Max-Planck-, Helmholtz-, Fraunhofer Institutes etc.).The sector in the region gained a total of 273 jobs, adding up to regional employment growth of 5.6% in the sector.Smaller companies dominate the region’s business landscape: 139 companies in the sector have less than 10 employees. Only 13% of the total jobs are located in these companies, however. Over 53% of the sector’s employees in the region work for the 19 companies with more than 50 employees. The majority of these companies (88%) focus on the areas of new therapeutic agents, diagnostic products and biopharmaceuticals services; followed by 19% in the agriculture/food sectors and 13% in the industrial biotechnology sector (multiple mentions). 40 Nobel Prize winners are affiliated to the Berlin-based universities.

Berlin-Brandenburg boasts seven biotechnology parks, which offer optimal space for the specific requirements of every company. This geographic concentration of specific biotech parks is unique in Germany and probably in all of Europe. The parks differ in their offers and strategic focus and provide ideal conditions for newcomers. More than half of the 232 companies are currently utilizing the infrastructure of a publicly or privately managed park. In addition, the young companies benefit from the closeness to science and the permanent contact and exchange.

Glance at Germany Market of Biotechnology:

For the first time ever, the industry cracked the sales mark of €3bn in turnover generated. Compared to last year, this was an increase of 5.8%. With a total of almost 17,930, there were more employees than ever before working in the biotech industry (2013: 16950). And for the first time since 2008, spending on research and development (R&D) increased rather than decreased and is now at €954m (+ 6.2%). Investments mirrored the growth trend: around €445m was invested in German biotech companies compared to €401m the year before. Private firms raised a total of €172m in 18 rounds of financing, which marks an increase of 26% compared to 2015. Nevertheless, the interest from big business in biotech products remains steady, not only in the healthcare industry but increasingly also in the area of the bioeconomy. The sector in the region gained a total of 273 jobs, adding upto regional employment growth of 5.9% in the sector.
Against the previous year, the total number of these companies increased to 570 (+0.9 %), including 13 start-ups – 7 fewer than 2014. In addition, there were 130 firms active in biotechnology as only one aspect of business (2012: 128). Thus, in the year 2013, there were 35,400 jobs places in commercial biotechnology in Germany. The financing situation has undergone a positive development, with around 400 million euros capital raised (+16,3 %). These are the central conclusions of the company survey carried out by the information platform biotechnologie.de at the beginning of 2013 on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The data were gathered in accordance with the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Globally, the medical technology, medical biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors have estimated combined sales of £0.6-1tn with R&D spend to sales ratios higher than 10%. Estimated future growth rates in these markets continue to show strong positive trends with rates of 4-10% predicted over the next 8-10 years.
